A New Breed of Singing Law Enforcers

The Filipinos love for singing knows no boundaries – and it is not unsurprising that the future law enforcers of the country to form a choir group to bring the love for singing to the next level. The Philippine College of Criminology-Manila Law College’s (PCCr-MLC) very own PCCr-MLC Chorale is proof that whatever career choice or background you have, the common interest in singing will bind you together.

Last Friday, November 13, 2009, the PCCr-MLC Choral became part of the prestigious Concert at the Park series at Paco Park.  Now on its 2nd Concert Season in 2009, Paco Park Presents is a joint cultural project of the National Parks Development Committee headed by Deputy Executive Director-OIC Salome T. Habal and the National Broadcasting Network in partnership with PCCr-MLC. The concert was hosted by Ms. Thea Perez-Prosia and was aired nationwide over NBN-Channel 4.

The PCCr-MLC Chorale headed by Choir Director Rodel Rivera, delighted the audience and supporters with songs such as The Philippine National Anthem, The Prayer, Love is the Answer, An Affair to Remember, What Matters Most, Ti Ayat Ti Maysa Nga Ubing, Bituing Walang Ningning, Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin, Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin, Sa ‘Yo Lamang, Stand By Me, La Cucaracha and The Lord’s Prayer.

Lending their support and encouragement during the concert werePCCr-MLC administration, faculty, employees and students headed by President Gregory Alan Bautista F. Bautista.

The PCCr-MLC Chorale traces its origin as early as the 1990’s when the then Vice President for Student Affairs (and now the college’s President and Chairman of the Board) Gregory Alan F. Bautista envisioned to organized a choir group. Being a theater and movie actor, President Bautista’s love for the performing arts extends to music. After his investiture as the college’s president, he mandated for the creation of the PCCr-MLC Chorale as a recognized and accredited school organization for the students.  The vision for the chorale is to be a venue for students to showcase their talents in singing and to provide a venue where students can socialize and express their feelings.

The task of finding members for the up and coming group fell into the hands of Choir Director Rodel J. Rivera, a product of University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music with a degree of Bachelor of Music in Conducting under the tutelage of Prof. Herminigildo G. Ranera, Ph.D.  With the help also of Guidance Counselor Dr. Maria Lourdes V. Galindez who assiduously conducted room-to-room campaign to discover the school’s hidden talents.  Sixty-seven students auditioned and twenty-seven qualified as the first members of the PCCr-MLC Chorale.

Since then, the PCCr-MLC Chorale has performed in various college activities such as the 2008 PCCr-MLC Christmas Party, the PCCr-MLC Orientation Program, the Dr. Eduardo J. Bautista Memorial Day and the Annual Justice Felix Angelo Bautista Song Festival.  Through these exposures, the chorale has attracted new members.

The PCCr-MLC Chorale is also one of the ways the college help the less fortunate students in terms of financial assistance.  A bona-fide chorale member is entitled to audition for scholarship grants of the school after completing one semester of probation. Scholarship grants such as 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% tuition fee discount are tremendous help for the chorale members especially during this time of global economic crisis.
